Description: Released as part of TattooDad’s quest to liberate “ubertrader” material, this pro-shot DVD features the second-half of the show on a cold night in Verona. The first-half of the concert is not known to exist but intriguingly the discs are marked respectively as Act 2 and Act 3 so there is scope for this to become a 3 disc set in the future, although, as with a similar video from Toronto in 1984, we probably shouldn’t hold our collective breaths for Act 1!

This transitional period in Bruce’s career is much maligned by some fans but this performance showcases the “Other Band” after a year on the road and the DVD reveals a very competent musical outfit. The band could never hope to engender the same emotional connection with the fans as its E-Street equivalents but no-one in Verona that night would have thought anything other than they had seen a great show; the encore in particular is excellent with “My Beautiful Reward” and “ Workin’ On the Highway” being notable highlights. Special mention too for a very nice acoustic version of “Thunder Road”.

As is the norm with HOJO, the production is of high quality and the Shakespearian theme is a nice touch. The video is excellent, particularly considering its age, and contains enough audience shots to ensure it doesn’t feel sterile. Unfortunately, the audio doesn’t quite reach the same standard. HOJO cleaned up the original audio to remove the hiss which marred the overall sound. It was then remixed with audience recordings to add a little atmosphere and try to overcome the distortion on the original source, presumably as a result of the audio level being set too high when it was recorded. The extent to which the distortion is still noticeable and will irritate may depend on viewers’ equipment or audio set-up; this reviewer found it difficult to listen to at certain moments on his PC but experienced no such problems when viewing the show through the magic of television. Whatever the case, the finished mix is a significant improvement on the original source recording and audio collectors should note it has also been made available on CD. For the purists, the original soundtrack is available as optional audio on the DVD.

The bonus video features a performance from Oslo on the final night of the 1993 European tour. Featuring Warren Kaye, aka roadie “Chainsaw, on guitar and lead vocals, it is, frankly, scary and shouldn’t be viewed by anyone with a weak heart- ever wanted to see Roy Bittan or Shayne Fontayne “headbanging”?! You may even be thankful next time Wolfgang Niedecken or Terrence Trent D’Arby shares the stage with Bruce!

Whether you care for the “Other Band” or not, this is a release you should hunt down. What are you waiting for?!

Audio source 1 had better low end and crowd noise (sense of scale), source 2 had better sounding more direct music from the sound system. Combined together was the best. However, source 2 was incomplete, so many songs have only source 1. The sax and piano are very low in the mix on source 1. So much so that it almost seems like Clarence missed his Janey and Mary’s Place solos entirely (he didn’t). Not that many of you will watch Mary’s Place anyway 😉
Video source 3 is the best video, but of course, incomplete.
The inconsistency of the sources is reflected in the inconsistency of the mix, however, I think I did the best I could, and I certainly enjoyed watching it back.
Yes 3DVDs. Considering the fact I was re-encoding exisitng DVDs, I wasn’t happy with the bitrate needed to fit it onto 2 DVDs, even if I had compressed the audio.

Dopo tanto sono riuscito finalmente a guardarmi un DVD bootleg di Springsteen dal titolo “And Then There Were Three” prodotto da Digi-TOx.

Purtoppo per me il DVD è dual layer quindi non ho potuto masterizzarmelo ma solo vederlo al PC.

Notes: This make-up show, postponed and relocated due to Hurricane Wilma, gave Florida concertgoers a special treat to make up for the wait as Bruce was joined by not one but two E Streeters. So far on the tour, Nils Lofgren and Patti Scialfa had pitched in; for this Saturday night show, Steve Van Zandt and local hero Clarence Clemons guested, in both the main set and the encore. They came out first for “Drive All Night,” adding texture for the musical highlight of the night, with Steve picking on a six-string acoustic and the Big Man nailing the sax part on a stool at center stage. Steve came back for “Two Hearts,” joining Bruce on acoustic guitar and vocals, and they both returned for another trio on “Thundercrack” in the encore. This new venue — a narrow, 6,000 seat hall — had potential for a really intimate show, but a noisy crowd never quite settled down, despite Bruce’s admonition early on: “I can get along without being cheered during the song — I’ve been doing this for a while.” Could’ve been the fact that the hall was part of a casnio complex — which wasn’t all bad, as it inspired an audible of “Roll of the Dice,” a tour premiere. “Lucky Town” was thrown in for good measure, “Fade Away” and “Meeting” returned, and “Santa Ana” was dedicated to “all of you obsessive-compulsives.”
