E Street Band Saxophonist Clarence Clemons has Suffered a StrokeHis condition remains uncertain
Rolling Stone can confirm reports that Clarence Clemons has had a stroke. The news broke this evening at 411.com, which reported that Clemons is “seriously ill after a stroke at his home in Florida.” We have no information on the severity of the stroke, but we have independently confirmed that the E Street Band saxophonist has suffered a stroke.
Clemons has gone through a series of medical ailments – mostly involving his back and knees – over the past decade. He hasn’t missed any concerts, but the conditions caused him to suffer a tremendous amount of pain and discomfort. “That last tour was hell,” Clemons told Rolling Stone in February. “Pure hell.” In the past year Clemons had both knees replaced and spinal fusion surgery. “The timing was perfect because it didn’t interfere with a lot of stuff that was going on in my life,” he says. “It made me stronger, and for the past year I’ve been in physical therapy a few days a week working my ass off to get back in shape. I’m walking better now, though I still use a cane and crutches. But now I’m having hip problems again. I don’t know why.”
Clemons last performed with Springsteen and the E Street Band in December of 2010 at Asbury Park’s Carousel House for a special web broadcast taping. He performs on two songs on Lady Gaga’s new album Born This Way, and just last month played “Edge of Glory” with her at the season finale of American Idol. He was supposed to play the national anthem before Game 2 of the NBA Finals last week, but a hand injury forced him to cancel at the last minute. He watched the game in the stands with Tim Hardaway and Alonzo Mourning.
When Rolling Stone spoke to Clemons in February he said that virtually nothing would take him off the road with Springsteen and The E Street Band. “As long as my mouth, hands and brain still work I’ll be out there doing it,” he said. “I’m going to keep going ’til I’m not there anymore. This is what’s keeping me alive and feeling young and inspired. My spiritual teacher Sri Chinmoy told me that my purpose in life is to bring joy and light to the world, and I don’t know any better way to do then what I’m doing now.”

We’ll have more information on Clemons’ medical condition as the story develops.

Buona lettura.
When one thinks of religion, rock ‘n’ roll music usually does not come to mind. However, Bruce Springsteen’s music forces some to rethink this very notion. At 5 p.m. April 14 in Wingate 202, the Departments of Religion, Anthropology and Music co-sponsored a discussion titled “Religion and Bruce Springsteen.”
Wake Forest alumna Linda Randall and author of Finding Grace in the Concert Hall led the discussion. Randall received her Master’s degree in Religion and Culture and is now a professor at the Empire State College. Her book began as her major thesis after her adviser told her to follow her passions.
Randall was first introduced to Springsteen in 1975 when she was 24-years-old, but did not see him again until 1999. Randall went to her fourth Springsteen concert alone, and it was the first time she had attended any event alone. She wanted to see if the feelings she first experienced upon viewing Springsteen live could be reproduced. “What I felt was not a rock ‘n’ roll concert,” she said. “I felt like all my sins in life were forgiven.”
To date, and just over the course of nine years, Randall has seen 70 shows and has traveled to Northern Ireland, Australia, Italy, France, New Zealand and many other countries.
Randall has seen the way people are connected with each other and she has observed the calls and responses between Springsteen and his audience, and has been left continually amazed. Initially, Randall was sure not to confuse her emotions for contagious enthusiasm and said, “I’ve never been a joiner. I don’t join clubs or organizations, but still when I was at the show, I felt that I was a part of something.”
All of Springsteen’s songs have a thread of redemption and hope and Randall finds his honesty and sincerity very appealing. The topics of his songs also include justice, friendship and honesty. “He believes what he writes and he writes what he believes,” she said. After “coming to Bruce,” Randall started to surf the Internet and found an entire community of Bruce fans who were both welcoming and tolerant of other people’s opinions.
Fans often refer to themselves as the Springsteen Nation or the Church of Bruce.
Randall spoke of a time when she solicited money for a food bank and within 20 minutes, she received $3,000 from the online community of Bruce fans, who completely trusted her with the belief that she was a fan and therefore would never deceive them.
Randall found that these fans do not look to Springsteen as a god. Rather, listening to his music provides them with a religious experience.
Though Springsteen usually does not disclose information about his philanthropic efforts, Randall said that Springsteen has made many contributions to the Kristen Anna Carr Fund, the Community Foundation of New Jersey, the City of Hope, the Second Harvest Food Bank, amongst many other organizations.
According to Randall, Bruce Springsteen is the closest thing many people have to religion.
The church is no longer the sole medium to supply religious fervence nor is it the sole medium through which people experience spirituality.
Randall adds that for many, organized religion no longer provides inspiration and enlightenment, however, music has provided such fulfillment.
Chris D’Auria, Wake Forest fellow of the Catholic Campus Ministry responded to the event.
“I always find it interesting when elements of religion are discovered in secular sources,” D’Auria said.
“After hearing the lecture, I would love to experience this firsthand, sooner rather than later.”
Un breve video per augurarvi un buon fine settimana e una buona Pasqua.

COLUMBIA RECORDS TO RELEASE BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN’S “THE PROMISE: THE MAKING OF DARKNESS ON THE EDGE OF TOWN” DOCUMENTARY FROM ACCLAIMED BOX SET AS SINGLE DVD/BLU-RAY WITH BONUS MATERIAL MAY 3
INCLUDES ADDITIONAL VIDEOS “SONGS FROM THE PROMISE” CONCERT EVENT FILMED IN ASBURY PARK, NJ AND INTIMATE Q&A SESSION “A CONVERSATION WITH HIS FANS”
Columbia Records will release Bruce Springsteen’s “The Promise: The Making of Darkness On The Edge of Town” documentary on DVD and Blu-Ray May 3. The award-winning film will be accompanied by the bonus features “Songs From the Promise,” a five-song concert event filmed in Asbury Park, NJ, and “A Conversation With His Fans,” an intimate question-and-answer session.
“The Promise: The Making of Darkness On The Edge of Town” was directed by Grammy- and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Thom Zimny. The film premiered on HBO and received a rapturous critical response around the world, including as an official selection, Toronto International Film Festival, The BFI London Film Festival, and The International Rome Film Festival. The Los Angeles Times gave ‘The Promise’ five stars, while Variety called it “thrilling–a vivid portrait.”
The ninety-minute documentary combines never-before-seen footage of Springsteen and the E Street Band shot between 1976 and 1978—including home rehearsals and studio sessions—with new interviews with Springsteen, E Street Band members, manager Jon Landau, former-manager Mike Appel, and others closely involved in the making of the record.
The film was also included in the 2010 box set ‘The Promise: The Darkness on the Edge of Town Story,’ which Rolling Stone called “extraordinary [and] fascinating” and The Washington Post described as “a revelation.”
“Songs From The Promise” was filmed before an audience of approximately sixty fans in December, 2010, in Asbury Park, NJ’s historic carousel house. For this one-time concert event, Springsteen and members of the E Street Band lineup—Clarence Clemons, Stevie Van Zandt, Max Weinberg, Roy Bittan, and Gary Tallent—were joined by keyboardist Charles Giordano, a full horn section—Ed Manion, Barry Danielian, Curt Ramm, Clark Gayton and Stan Harrison—and special guest David Lindley, who played violin during the original recording sessions. Directed and edited by Zimny and mixed by Emmy-winner Bob Clearmountain, the concert features the only live E Street Band performances of four tracks from ‘The Promise’ plus “Blue Christmas.”
“Songs From The Promise” Tracklist:
1. “Racing in the Street (’78)
2. “Gotta Get That Feeling”
3. “Ain’t Good Enough For You”
4. “The Promise”
5, “Blue Christmas”
Hosted by music critic and Springsteen biographer Dave Marsh, “A Conversation With His Fans” is an intimate, 22-minute question-and-answer session featuring Springsteen at his most candid. Before a small audience in the studios of Sirius XM’s E Street Radio channel, Springsteen discusses the writing and recording of ‘Darkness on the Edge of Town’ and the decision to release the extensive collection of songs that didn’t make the record. “We worked hard on the music that we didn’t put out,” Springsteen tells one fan. “The nice thing about it is it’s still there, it hasn’t gone anywhere–and I think we’re at a point where it’s nice to have the stuff sufficiently see the light of day.” Questions are intercut with highlights from the ‘The Promise’ box set, including the Paramount Theater concert and rare archival footage from 1978.

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN: A CONVERSATION WITH HIS FANS will premiere on VH1 Classic on Friday at 9:00PM
Bruce Springsteen: A Conversation With His Fans is a 30 minute TV program, where fans ask Bruce thought-provoking questions in an intimate studio setting. Bruce discusses the music of Darkness on the Edge of Town and his new album The Promise, in this special broadcast hosted by music critic Dave Marsh. Fan questions are intercut with highlights from the box set, The Promise documentary, the Paramount Theater concert, the 2010 Songs From The Promise concert and rare archival footage from 1978.
For the past few years, Bruce has performed on behalf of Monmouth County’s Ranney School, and this year’s set at the Stone Pony was, by all accounts, a remarkable event. His three hour set, backed by Bobby Bandiera’s band and Max Weinberg, spanned his entire songwriting career, from “Growin’ Up” to “My Lucky Day.” A number of guests participated, including Southside Johnny, Danny Clinch, Ron Aniello, Bruce’s mom Adele, and a couple of Ranney School teachers. Check outBackstreets‘ coverage, with eyewitness coverage by Stan Goldstein.
On January 15, Bruce contributed to an amazing night of music on behalf of the Light of Day Foundation, at the Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park. As he has often done in the past, Bruce sat in with Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers, but also participated in sets by Willie Nile, Jesse Malin, and Alejandro Escovedo. Check out Backstreets‘s detailed coverage with lots of photos and video (check out the acoustic “Your Own Worst Enemy,” a connoisseur’s favorite from Magic). Andy Greene was there too, reporting on behalf of Rolling Stone.
Find out more about Light of Day, and see some great photos, on its Facebook page.
Bruce collaborated on a track called “Better Things” on the new Ray Davies album ‘See My Friends’ in which Ray reinterprets old Kinks classics. On this one of a kind album, Ray collaborates with an amazing selection of artists on tracks from his incredible songwriting career, revisiting his back catalogue and crafting new versions of his classic songs. Everyone from Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi to Metallica features on this diverse collection of material.
Nel senso che finalmente mi è arrivato il cofanetto (il vinile arriverà domani), qui trovate il commento di Larry.
A voi è arrivato? Qualcuno lo ha già ricevuto? Che ne pensate?
Secondo me, maglietta a parte, è stupendo! Molto meglio di Born to run che già era un prodotto notevole.
